For our Christmas Webinar for 2021, Stuart was joined by sustainable consumption and product design expert, Professor Tim Cooper, of Nottingham Trent University, who discussed how his 1994 report ‘Beyond Recycling’ included many of the strands within circular economy thinking, and why his particular interest in extending product life is a key element of the circular economy. Rachel Barnes of Barnes and Binns General Store in Hove talked about setting up a waste-free store and how they are building relationships with the local community and with closed loop suppliers.
Live, Christmas music was supplied by Simeon Walker, pianist and composer.

On 11th December 2020, we held a Christmas webinar looking at the Wastes of Christmas Past, Present & Future. We were fortunate enough to have an array of guests looking at various aspects, they were:

Gill King from the Museum of London Archeology

Paul Frith from Frith Resource Management

Sarahjane Widdowson from Intelisos

Sarah Knapp from Integrated Skills

and Simeon Walker, pianist & songwriter

There were insights provided into the evolving waste composition that has been collected over the past couple of centuries as well as how it was managed. Then looking at current expectations in waste management but also recent developments under the circumstances of Covid-19 in 2020. There was then consideration of how to improve our approaches as a society but also approaches to sustainability and better circular economy. Simeon provided a wonderful soundtrack with some of his music and a rendition of a Carol, keeping things festive. View the webinar below:

On Friday 21st August 2020, we hosted a webinar investigating the approach Leeds City Council took in order to open re-use shops at two of their household waste sites. Hearing from Liz Behrens, we were given a comprehensive understanding of the steps required to successfully deliver such a project as well as other practical elements including the management, space and funding required.

Liz elaborated on the steps she and her team took to establish the first shop and how the responsibilities were divided. They were keen to allow retailers to manage that aspect of their operations. Which segues neatly into our net guest, from Louise Megson from Revive Leeds - the shop itself. 'Revive Leeds is a partnership between St Vincent De Paul, a charity helping alleviate poverty and SLATE, a charity supporting people with learning disabilities. Any profits are pumped straight back into the organisations supporting local people.'

Louise emphasised the community element of the Revive project and how valuable it has been for the volunteers and some 30 employees.

Key concepts and latest developments every Waste & Environmental Manager should know.

On Friday 19th June 2020, we hosted a webinar discussing the Circular Economy model with Stuart Henshaw of Integrated Skills and Brian Mayne, a leader on the subject. Brian set out the key concepts and explained the latest developments resulting from the approach and investigated how local authorities can adapt.

Previously, the regional director (Wales) for Ricardo Energy and Environment, Brian has managed the delivery of local government waste management services, and is also a specialist in marketing, communications and behaviour change. Brian has been involved in the development and delivery of a number of UK wide awareness campaigns and has lectured at Cardiff, Reading, Leeds, Swansea and Aberystwyth Universities. He has also developed and delivered a range of training on environmental and waste issues including the circular economy. He is a writer and is currently producing a series of articles on the Circular Economy.

Stuart is Business Development Director at Integrated Skills and leads their wider waste awareness webinar programme.

Brian Mayne is a fellow of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, a fellow of the RSA, Chartered Environmentalist and an ISWA International Waste Manager.
