This work was completed in 2018. The three waste streams: kerbside collected household residual waste; HWRC bulky and black sack waste and Wood waste were analysed. A team of nine analysts carried out the work over a three week period. Samples of household waste were collected from every RCV entering two Waste Transfer stations operated by LCC. The vehicles tipped and then a scoop was removed using a small FEL. The samples were then transferred into bulk bags and delivered to the hand sort team. In total 126 samples were collected and hand sorted with a total weight of 8.5 tonnes. In addition, bulky waste and black sack waste from 5 HWRCs was analysed, total weight 5.1 tonnes and 13 wood waste samples, total weight 14 tonnes. With this number of samples for the household waste and wood waste it was possible to carry out statistical analysis on the results including standard deviation and confidence interval analysis. The ISL team won high praise from the Leicestershire Project Manager for their positive working attitude, respectful relationship towards staff at the sort site, keen organisational skills, close attention to detail and the quality of data analysis and reporting. The results are being used for procurement purposes and to look more closely and waste minimisation opportunities.
