Maurice Sheridan, Barrister, LLM, LLB, Dip. FLC

Maurice Sheridan is an international and environmental lawyer with over 20 years' experience.  For the past 15 years Maurice has been extensively involved in issues affecting countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union concerned with preparing their legislation and legal system for the requirements of European Community law.

This work has been conducted through the subject areas increasingly of environmental law. Having been responsible for assessing administrative and legal capacity in these countries, he has looked at issues of land-use planning, water legislation, waste management and licensing / permitting issues, IPPC permitting process, liability for environmental pollution, in common law, as well as under statute, and with questions of civil as well as criminal liability, particularly at the suit of environmental regulatory authorities.

In addition to this work in Central and Eastern Europe, he has also been working extensively on an advisory level and in litigation before the courts on environmental liability issues for local government bodies, central state environmental agency, for commercial companies, privatised utilities, non-governmental organisations and private individuals. This has often involved applying EC law, including policy and experience in European Policy.

Maurice Sheridan has been and continues to be involved in various Environmental Accession projects for the approximation of EU environmental legislation and policy in Romania, Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Ukraine.

A majority of the work he has been involved in domestically and internationally on a wide range of issues involved solid waste management solutions. He acts on a regular basis for a number of key companies operating in this area in the UK, advising and acting on their behalf before national regulators, local authorities, and courts and tribunals. In addition to acting for waste disposal and collection companies in domestic arbitrations, he has also been Legal Assessor to the Arbitration Tribunal.

He has recently completed a Project for the European Commission as Team Leader and Legal Expert on revising and upgrading the Handbook on Implementation of Community Environmental Legislation. The Project also involved the provision of detailed legal advice on harmonisation issues relating to Community Environmental Legislation.
