Michael P Humphries, BA, MA, MICE, MCIWM - Associate Director

Michael Humphries is a civil engineer with 20 years management and engineering experience in the field of solid waste management.  During the initial period of his career, he was the Waste Disposal Manager for Kent County Council with responsibility for planning and directing waste disposal operations for a large area in southern England.

After leaving Kent County Council, he undertook a wide range of wastes management projects including:
  • Planning and design of waste transfer stations for Bombay, India; Doha, Qatar; Hong Kong;
  • Preparation of the waste disposal plan for London and the South-East of England;
  • Preparation of waste disposal plans for three cities in Poland;
  • Planning and execution of a programme to clean up and restore 14 waste dump sites in Oman.
  • A study to develop environmentally friendly procurement policies and waste management practices for office wastes including potentially hazardous wastes, for the European Commission.

During the past few years, he has acted as the waste facilities engineer for projects to develop solid waste management systems for Hong Kong's new airport, and landfill facilities for the privatisation of solid waste management in Malaysia.  He was a key member of the team advising the Municipality of Piotrków, Poland, on the development of a waste management strategy, prepared all the engineering costings for a feasibility study of a municipal waste recycling facility in Saudi Arabia and contributed to the development of landfill guidelines for Botswana.  He has recently assisted with the assessment of waste management options for the States of Guernsey, the development of an integrated waste management strategy for the City of Rostov-on-Don, Russia, a pre-feasibility study for MSW management in Kharkiv, Ukraine and the preparation of a solid waste management strategy for Yalova Province in Turkey.
