Michael Betts has over 30 years' diverse experience in the field of environmental management and protection. An economist by training, his experience lies particularly in the planning, financial / economic appraisal, organisation and management of wastewater and waste management related projects. He has supervised a large number of environmental studies and projects around the world, especially in Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle and Far East. In addition, he has been responsible for planning and managing numerous major Environmental Impact Assessments and audits, and has extensive experience of developing and implementing Quality Management Systems to ISO 9000 series and Environmental Management Systems to ISO 14001.

Recent projects include:

• Provision of advice and assistance to the Croatian Ministry of Environmental Protection, Physical Planning and Construction (MEPPPC) in developing an overall strategy and programme for transposing and implementing the EU environmental acquis, and preparing an integrated National Waste Management Strategy
• A review of options for Private Sector Participation in the provision of public waste management facilities and services, for the Municipality of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
• A study for HM Treasury of options for recycling revenue arising from planned increases in the UK landfill tax from 2005-6 back to business, in order to tackle market failures and reduce the volume of business waste landfilled.
• Provision of advice and assistance to the recently created Croatian Environment and Energy Efficiency Fund (EEEF).
• An EU-financed waste management feasibility study and plan for the Panevezys region, Lithuania.
• A review and analysis of policy options in relation to the provision and operation of public waste management facilities and services for the States of Guernsey Board of Administration.
• A detailed review and evaluation of the existing policies, organisation, systems, procedures and financing operations of the Bulgarian National Trust Ecofund (NTEF).
• Preparation of a National Waste Management Plan for the Czech Republic, for the Czech Ministry of Environment / European Commission.
